The
modern organization, economy, and demographics of society mean that the
workplace today and in the future is very different from that of 10, 15, or
more years in the past. Organizations are hiring younger people to bring a
newer feel to the company. Jobs are harder to find due to being highly
competitive. People are retiring later for both good and bad reasons. Work is
slowly moving online and it isn’t waiting for anyone. It is becoming harder to
find jobs that pay well and offer good benefits. It is time to adapt and thrive
in this new environment.

I personally witnessed Sears
laying off older employees and hiring younger kids trying to change the face of
the company or at least make them look refreshed. At Sears, they started to lay
off the older employees despite being with the company for quite a few years.
They began to hire younger employees who did not stick around for too long due
to the poor working environments and workloads for such little pay. These days
if you are not in a union or public sector, the career you want to peruse could
be disappearing or already may have. People are coming out of post-secondary only
to realize that long term employment is very difficult to find. I have noticed that
job changes are becoming much more frequent. I, being a 17 year old, have had two
jobs and my sister being 20, has also had two as well. My uncle who has not
reached his late 30’s yet has had 5-6 jobs not including the ones he works
right now. That says quite a bit. He currently is working three jobs and works
90-100 hours a week only getting 1-2 hours of sleep sometimes just to support
his “young” family. My mom had been working at sears for almost 11 years while
my dad has been working at Safran Messier Bugatti Dowty for almost 30 years! It
is so much harder my uncle says to find a full time job than a part time job. It
is even harder for people who are coming from other underdeveloped countries
since their high school education does not count in Canada and even the post-secondary
education that they have done does not count.

In recent years, retirement has stabilized and people are
retiring at a later age. Now, the average retirement age is close to 70. One reason the retirement age is being pushed back is that
the style of work has changed, for many people there are a lot more office jobs
than it used to be. We are living longer as
well as healthier lives, which means some people might want to work longer. Canadians
are making sure they have a comfortable retirement and are investing in their
retirement savings. Many families had thought that when their kids were older,
they would have fewer expenses and would be able to start saving more for
retirement, but it may not always happen the way you planned it. Skip a couple
years ahead to their kids’ teenage years and parents may find out that they
have not even started yet with the major financial demands of their kids with new
electronics, some of the latest clothes, or maybe even a car with expensive
insurance and gas just to add on top of that. Also all those costs are on top
of the tuition and other post-secondary education expenses. After years of decline, working longer
in life is making a comeback. A survey showed that 40% of people age 55 and up
still work. The numbers haven’t been this high since the 1960’s. In the last 10
years, workers who are aged 55 and up have accounted for virtually all
workforce growth.

 

According to the Government
of Canada job market trends, full time job vacancies increased roughly by
54,000, whereas part time jobs increased about 14,000 on a yearly basis. The
overall hourly wage did not change from the $19.50 pay throughout the country.
During this period, the much improved labor market conditions are thought to be
because of several labor market indicators. According to the Labor Force
Survey, Canada’s job openings have increased at quiet a noticeable rate of
change since 2016 and the unemployment number has continued to decline.  Comparing Q1 of 2017 to 2016, the number of
job openings has increased by 18.8% in Canada, along with the job opening rate,
which rose 0.4%. These quarterly increases could partially reflect seasonal employment
patterns, as especially between the first and second quarters of 2015 and 2016 job
vacancies were also on an increase. Compared with one year earlier Ontario had 20, 000
about 12% more job openings to fill in Q2 Large cities across southern Canada had a huge rise
of job vacancies. It is getting harder to find jobs that pay well and offer desired
or needed benefits.

            So what’s changing with the work
environment now? Virtual work is growing at a crazy speed, faster than we have
ever seen and it is likely to be part of most Canadian’s work and shopping
experience by 2030. Virtual work is available to everyone with Internet connection
as well as a smart phone or tablet. Job security and financial stability will become
more difficult to achieve due to a growing online marketplace that will
increase self employment and short term contracts. This new technology does not
wait for anyone. Employees have to go along with it or be left behind, forcing
people to change. Workers can be turned into independent contractors with the
help of an online freelance model, which alters the relationship between
employees, and employers, this model would work even with employers who do
small tasks for one client. Some of the freelance work could be shorter than
usual and assignments may have lower pay rates. Workers might not be able to
find a reliable supply of work as more jobs become virtual. It also may be hard
to obtain regular steady and well-paying wages as well as employment benefits
that are important if you need health benefits or a pension plan. Some people
may also need income security programs like employee insurance.
