Publius Ovidius Naso was the last of the poets of the Golden Age of Roman literature. Ovid affected was popular not only during the times of Roman Empire but also during medieval times, Renaissance, and until today. The popularity of Ovid was conditioned by his style, which appears depending on the era when the author lives. Ovid wrote in the time when the emperor Octavian ruled, after the end of the civil war when the Romans lived wealthy and peacefully. Because of that, the issues that he writes about are not something complicated but simple and mostly about love. The significant part of the Ovid’s writings is ironic parodies of traditional literature motifs with flexible style.

When it comes to deciding whose creations resemble the style of Ovid the most, two people suit best for this comparison, and they are Stephen Colbert and Mel Brooks. Both of them are comedians but the way they deliver the message to the audience is different. Stephen Colbert is the famous for being a host of the comedy shows such as The Colbert Report and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In a satirical way, he mocks current situation in the world. For instance, he delivered the speech at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner where the policy of George Bush was criticized.

Unlike Colbert, Brooks is famous for making parody films such as Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Dracula: Dead and Loving It. These films deconstruct the plot of the original story by the way of humor, and at the same time, Brooks adheres to the style of the original story. For instance, in Dracula: Dead and Loving It, the main character bites Lucy and covers her with her cloak. This is a tribute to Dracula’s image made by Christopher Lee in 1958, which was one of the most popular horror films of the 20-th century. Thus, the way Mel Brooks creates parodies is more complicated and resembles the style of Ovid much more than the way Stephen Colbert does it.
