I
believe that if we spoke a different language, we would perceive the world
differently. Knowing another language helps us learn and understand the culture
of that particular language. This is why I want to become a translator or
interpreter as I am very intrigued by how different culture can be. I am
excited to discover the hidden perception of communication and culture, which
can allow me to educate others through translation. I am bilingual speaker of
both English and Italian meaning that I have encountered life though both
cultures. I believe that speaking another language allows you to think and see
things in several ways that others may not familiar with. This reflects exactly
why I feel so passionate about many languages around the world. My fascination
towards English, Italian and Spanish, in particular, is closely related to this.
From a young age I was translating and interpreting for my mother, who cannot
speak god English. With this I have found that I enjoy interpreting for others
as it bring my great satisfaction knowing that I can help others through verbal
and written communication. My motivation for wanting to study translation is
connected to the attractiveness of the languages and cultures that come with
it. I am very eager to unravel the history of English, Italian and Spanish language
as they have intrigued me like no other language has. Their literature has also
inspired me to learn the languages as well as motivating me for the future for
example ‘Como Agua Para Chocolate’ by Laura Esquivel and ‘Io Non Ho Paura’ by
Niccolo Ammaniti. I believe reading a book in its original language is more
beneficial as a reader because you can discover different vocabulary structures
and cultural themes that you did not know before. I have always been interested
in exploring different meanings of the same word as all three of these languages
are so rich in their vocabulary. As a result I enjoy being able to express a similar
feeling or thought in many other ways. Personal I find interpreting a challenge.
It amazes me how one can simultaneously can interpret from language to the other;
in the future I would like to gain the skills I need to become an interpreter
myself. I have studied Spanish for nearly seven years at an academic level
which has urged me to take my learning further and study it at A Level. In
addition to improve my writing skills I decided to take Italian as an A Level
because I only had conversational skills meaning that I did not know how to
write an essay confidently without guidance. During the language courses, not
only have I become more confident in translating from English to Italian and Spanish
to English, it has also allowed me to improve my linguistic ability and
amplified my interest with translation. In my last year at school I volunteered
to teach a student Italian, to allow me to develop my teaching skills which
could benefit me in the near future. During the lessons, I have found that not
only does it bring me satisfaction to teach the language, also I feel like I’m
learning new things with my student which allows me to amplify my knowledge. Before
university I am looking to go to Spain for the summer to improve my fluency in
the language through work experience and living in the community.Studying translation
and interpretation at university will not only allow me to immerse myself into
different cultures, but it will also help me practice translating and
interpreting as a job.I sustain that one can do many things with speaking a new
language; also many opportunities can arise in the future. Being brought up in
both cultures has been beneficial in my life in many aspects, as it has helped
me learn a new language such as Spanish. In addition I believe that knowing a
language such as Spanish will open many doors, as its one of the most spoken
language in the world. The world is growing bigger and bigger and the demand
for translators and interpreters rises every day. I wish to help people to
better their communication and to be given this opportunity and be part of the
translating community.
