Alternative assignment. My area of focus for this paper is going deal developmental disabilities and how social workers interact and work with people with developmental disabilities. According to the American with disabilities act of 1990 defines a person with disabilities as a person who has a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Sometimes a person can struggle with both a physical and mental disabilities This includes babies, toddlers children, teens, young adults, and adults along with the aging population. This includes a wide range of disabilities like intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, language and learning disorders, cerebral palsy, vision impairment, and hearing loss. Social workers help people with disabilities by providing them with skills to increase their confidence in everyday society. Overall, a social worker assesses their client’s strengths and needs to determine what type of actions need to be taken to help them achieve their goals. After the social worker assesses the client, they create individualized plans to support and improve the client’s sense of well being. To help create the individualized plan, the social worker must do research into the community resources including government programs, activity groups, and support groups. Social workers help recommend programs that their client could benefit and grow from. They also help provide recommendations for certain accommodations that will allow them to build up social and everyday life skills to support themselves. For different age groups, this process can seem and become a little different. Sometimes more steps and actions need to be taken while in another case it is not as complicated. The main thing social workers do being an advocate on their client’s behalf. By advocating for their client they can assess the effectiveness of community resources that are provided. An example of how the process could be different is with social workers who work with children, work with the parents and teach the parents how to properly advocate for their child. A social worker typical day if helping people with disabilities make drives for a meaningful life by helping the needs of people every day. The therapy Social workers use for their clients differs upon the diagnosis. Types of therapy that social worker often uses behavioral, cognitive, occupational, drug, physical, and speech therapy are among some of the top therapy’s social workers provide. Behavioral therapy seeks to identify and help change possible self-destructive or unhealthy behaviors. It functions on the idea that all behaviors are learned and that unhealthy behavior can be changed. This type of treat focus on present issues and how to fix them. A Cognitive therapy is based on the theory that the way people perceive a situation is closely connected to their reaction than the actual situation itself. An Occupational therapy is the use of an intervention to develop, recover, or maintain the meaningful activities. This can use in individual, group or community settings. Occupation therapy often includes helping people participate fully in school, in social settings, injury rehab, and lastly helping the aging population by providing support with cognitive and physical changes. Drug therapy is the use of medication to help fix or repair receptors, enzyme and another defect that can affect a person able to live a full able life. Drug therapy is used when it’s needed not as the first choice. A Physical therapy is used to help reduce pain, gain mobility and strength, and this helps promote optimal physical use. One of the last most common types of therapy social workers use when they are wrong with people with disabilities is speech therapy, this includes helping people with speaking and communication skills, listening skills and writing skills. Most of these therapies are often combined to create an individualized program that allows the client to benefit the most from reaching out for help. One of the main skills a social worker needs to provide help for their clients with developmental disabilities is having a very strong advocate voice. Being a strong advocate for your client allows you to be able to help them in every possible way to help provide them with a fulfilling life. Every person strives to love, be loved and belong, which makes having a strong passion to help people be key. To put in long hours and tireless amounts to do work, you must have a strong passion for what you are doing. While working with clients you need to have an understanding that not every client is going to be the same, some can be easier, and some can be more difficult so having patience will allow you give your full attention to your client without becoming frustrated. Since every client is not going to be the same you have to be able to think on your toes and think outside of the box to provide the best plan for them. You also need to have self-awareness because you won’t know exactly what they are going through and how they feel you can understand, but you can’t always relate to their specific situation. Being kind with your client and being able to connect with them are some of the many ways to form a trust barrier with them, so they can feel safe and comfortable working with you. Lastly, you need to be able to support your client and help them gain confidence, so they can have the life they want to have. To give the client, the best chance at succeeding and growing a social worker must use different types of assessments to see what scale the disability is on, if it is on or more disabilities combine and what are the exact needs for the client. By understanding the full extent of what they are working with a social worker can help create a plan to provide the client with the best possible care. Social workers work with a phycologist to provide psychological testing to see how the person with the disability interacts with the environment they are in. another test is when a psychologist tests the strengths and limitations the client has. Social workers often reach out to other professions to help them with testing that they can provide themselves. Social workers are then able to read through the results and decide, which plan of action to take to help their clients. Many tests involved testing motor and comprehensive skills. Often social workers have a sit down meeting with the clients’ family, caretaker, or guardian and ask them questions about their client and what they would like to work one. During this interaction with the family, it’s easy to look for things that don’t seem typical for the behavior or mental and physical state. After all the assessments are looked at it makes it easier for the social worker to help create a plan that will provide the client with the best support to learn skills at their pace and be happy with who they are. While working as social workers you use many theories that were learned in school to help support and guide your work. I would say one of the most used theory while working with people with developmental disabilities is the strength-based theory. The strength-based theory helps provide a positive to help turn the negatives into more positives. While working with a client who does have disabilities there are going to be frustrating times and sad times, which I why focus on the positive, and the strengths come into play. Let’s say you have a client with down syndrome, and they are very shy and not too confident in themselves you would want to focus on what they think they are good at so that can help improve the shyness and make them more confident. That sometimes mean testing their boundaries but to grow and help them gain the skills they need we need to help turn their weaknesses into strengths. Another theory is the social learning theory. The social learning theory works great for kids and young teens who have disabilities. In order for them to break out of their comfort zone, people often need to watch other peers of theirs do it first. The social learning theory is based on that people learn from other people by watching, imitating and modeling. This theory is another great technique used when planning a child’s individual care system. The third theory that is important for social workers when working with people with developmental disabilities is the systems’ theory, which helps define the person behavior in systems. A system is often based off of a person’s need and reward. For example, if you’re having a hard time motivating a student who has a disability to participate with other kids you may want to find some way to entice the child to interact and work with the peers. By finding a way to engage the child it is giving the child a way to grow and become more confident. The last theory that would be pretty common would be the rational choice theory, which helps people with mental disabilities the most. The rational choice theory is all about examining the risk and benefit before making any decisions. This helps people who have anger issues because of a disability stop and think before they do a harmful action. Social workers who work with people with disabilities get thrown into new situations every day, some clients have good days, and some have bad days, but it’s all how the social worker reacts and handles those days help their client in the long run. The social workers strive to follow the NASW code of ethics one that follows very strongly is service. According to the NASW code of ethics, service is “Social workers elevate service to others above self-interest. Social workers draw on their knowledge, values, and skills to help people in need and to address social problems. Social workers are encouraged to volunteer some portion of their professional skills with no expectation of significant financial return.” I fully believe being in the field with people who have developmental disabilities is all about how you impact others. This work can be tiring but working with the people be the reward being able to provide them with the best care and individual plan possible is key to help them grow and continue to move forward in fulfilling life. Which follows the commitment to the client. Being able to make a plan specifically for a client can be difficult buts that is the way you are committing to making them better. Another part of the code of ethics they follow is social justice. By having social workers who specifically work with clients with disabilities make it known to society. Working with people who do have disabilities allows us to fight for the proper treatment and accommodations. It is our job to advocate for these people, so we can make disabilities come out from the shadow. By advocating for people with disabilities we are also advocating for their dignity it is our job to treat people with disabilities as PEOPLE. It is also our job to help people understand that disability is different but not wrong by the support our clients we can support the dignity and give them proper care. By using the social intelligence theory we are recognizing the importance of human relationships. One of the ways social workers work with people, and their disabilities is by having them interact with different concepts like human interaction in different settings. Lastly, having integrity and competence is important to you can allow yourself to focus fully on the client no matter the disability, the background they come from and what race they are. Our job is to help them get a fulfilling life and a happy life. Which means we will do whatever we can’t provide the client with the skills to give them the fulfilling, happy life. Disabilities don’t just affect one race they affect all people from all backgrounds. Which means you aren’t just working with one type of person/. You are going to be working with people who have different stories to what makes them who they are. People are always different from each other and working with so many clients you are not going to ever have the same client twice. As you work with new patients you see differences that you haven’t noticed, being able to work with many people be versatile because society is ever changing. You’re not only working with the client, you are working with their family, their beliefs likes and dislikes and their friends. Being able to work with your client in each other their different environments will help give a better understanding of what options and plans would be better for them. Last your client is also going to meet many new people. It can be doctors, other social workers, and new friends with or without disabilities. As a social worker, a goal is to unite people with disabilities, so they don’t feel alone, which is why there are many programs that are made for people that allow them to go have fun and interact with others. While watching all the films it discussed people with any type of developmental disabilities as people, which sometimes gets overseen. In the videos, they made sure to make people with these disabilities come out of the shadows and allow them to show themselves as human beings just like people without disabilities. As discussed in some of the videos I watched people who do have disabilities deserve to have a close to normal life, so they won’t have to feel like a burden to their parents or family members. Across the video, the one main common thing that was being said was the need for the improvement for people with developmental disabilities. As many people don’t get the proper care and treatment the new era of social work is trying to change the way we care for client sone lady actually has a client living with her because she was the only person to get through to these gentlemen and break down his barriers a teach him skills, so he can live a fulfilling life. One of the other videos a father who has two children with developmental disabilities talked about the struggles of also have children who don’t have disabilities and how time-consuming it can before care. A major aspect is that the people when they become adults are looked at as burdens to their family instead of gaining the knowledge they need to be able to support themselves and not rely on others as much. Sometimes the knowledge has to build and grow with a person s they learn new things about themselves as they get older. I watched a Ted talk that was given by a girl who has a developmental disability, and she even feels the system is lacking. It shows that with the proper care and support people who do have disabilities can live a close to “normal’ life and not be looked at as a burden. Many of the videos spoke of how we as a society need to focus on treating people with disabilities as people. Some of the videos differ because some are coming from the point of view of a social worker, CEO, and psychologist. They were still all talking about advocating for people.A. (2011, November 16). How communities came together to provide proper care for people. I believe this video is very credible because this gives the first-hand sight at how caring for developmental disabilities has changed over the years. It’s the main reason people fight for the equal treatment for those who have disabilities and why there is a big push to keep treating them like they are people.Making the Invisible Visible: Mental Health Needs of those with Developmental Disabilities.
